Is anesthesia required for dental procedures?
For safety and comfort, yes. Anesthesia allows us to thoroughly clean below the gumline, take X-rays, and perform extractions when needed – all without causing stress or pain.
While anesthesia always carries some risk, modern veterinary anesthesia is very safe. We perform pre-anesthetic screening and continuously monitor your pet throughout the procedure to minimize risk.
Over 60% of dental disease occurs below the gumline. Dental X-rays allow us to detect infections, bone loss, and tooth root issues that are not visible during a surface exam.
Extractions are only recommended if a tooth is diseased, fractured, or causing pain. If extractions are needed, we will discuss findings and next steps with you.
Most COHAT procedures take several hours from check-in to discharge. The exact time depends on your pet’s dental condition and any treatments required.
This varies by age, breed, and dental health. Many pets benefit from a COHAT every 1–2 years, but your veterinarian will make individualized recommendations.
Cost can vary based on your pet’s size, pre-procedure testing, dental findings, and whether extractions or additional treatments are needed.
