How a Somerville Vet is Helping Kids Learn About Pet Health Through Storytime and Play

Vet tech wrapping stuffed animal paw with kids during library event

A quick look at Tandem’s new library and school visits, where our vets and vet techs teach kids about pet health through storytime, Q&A, and hands-on crafts.

At Tandem Vet, we believe that teaching kids about animals and their care can be both fun and meaningful - and that learning doesn’t just happen in clinics. That’s why our team of veterinarians and veterinary technicians has launched a new community event series designed for schools, libraries, and early childhood programs across Somerville and Greater Boston.

The goal? Spark curiosity about pet health while creating hands-on learning moments kids won’t forget.

A New Kind of Storytime: Pet Health Comes to Life
During a recent event at a local school, our vet tech greeted a room full of children - ages two and up - with a group of plush toy dogs in tow. What followed was a lively, informal talk about what it’s like to visit the vet: What happens when a dog has a sore paw? Why do cats get checkups? And what should you do when you meet a dog for the first time?

To make it real, the children practiced “paw wrapping” using our soft stuffed animals and fun paw print gauze. Each child got to take their bandaged buddy home, reinforcing what they learned in a tangible way.

Reading, Questions, and Hands-On Crafts
Next came storytime - our vet tech read a favorite pet-themed children’s book Paw Patrol, and opened the floor for questions. Kids asked everything from “How many teeth does a dog have?” to “Can my cat smile?” (Yes, kind of.)

We ended the session with a simple craft project: turning paper plates and markers into imaginative pet portraits. Kids left with their creations in hand, and parents left with a newfound appreciation for just how much their children had absorbed about animal care.

Bringing It to Your Library or School
This is more than just a one-off event. It’s part of a broader community outreach program from Tandem Vet, a local Somerville veterinary team committed to making pet health more accessible, understandable, and engaging - even for the youngest members of our community.

If you’re a librarian, teacher, or parent involved in programming for kids and would like to bring this type of interactive event to your location, we’d love to hear from you. Our events are ideal for libraries, preschools, afterschool programs, and any group looking to teach children about animals in a hands-on, age-appropriate way.
